Christmas in Lillehammer

Lillehammer's principal tourist attraction is the open-air museum in Malhaugen Park, on the southeastern outskirts of the town. Founded by a local dentist, Anders Sandvig (1862-1950), in 1887, it consists of more than 100 old buildings, all re-erected here in their original form and furnished with old domestic equipment and implements. Among them are 18th century farmhouses from the heyday of peasant culture and various craftsmen's workshops, housed in a large separate building. The oldest building in the collection is a stave church from Garmo.

With its 180 employees the glassworks today not only represents a large and thriving industry undergoing constant development, but also significant operations linked to the Visitor Centre.

Kristiansten Fortress

Kristiansten Fortress, which overlooks Bakklandet and stands guard over the city, was built after Trondheim was ravaged by fire in 1681. The fort was used in the defence of Trondheim against Swedish troops in 1718, and was used as an execution site by the German occupation forces during World War II. Guided tours are available. Kristiansten has since 2001 not been in military use. The Norwegian Parliament has decided that the fortress is to be run as an open museum.
